March to Stop Avalon

Dear Friends of the Bay:

My family & I want to let you know that we strongly support your positions against the Avalon housing development at the old Hallock Chevrolet property.

Based on the information in your mailed flyer, it seems clear that the developers are only in this for the money & are satisfied to dump the infrastructure costs, both financial and environmental, on the taxpayers of Hamlet of Oyster Bay and adjoining villages & towns which are clearly ill-equipped to handle them.

I think it's important to get personal on this if it's true that Charles Wang is the principal owner of Island Properties. Since he lives out here & has been steadily buying up property in OB area, one would hope that he has a master plan for the area that includes substantial renovation & improvement as opposed to simply adding to his wealth at the expense of his neighbors.

When Robby Hallock told his customers, among whom I was pleased to count myself, that Wang was buying out Hallock, he said that Wang had committed to keeping Hallock Chevrolet in business since Rob was concerned for both his employees and his customers. Wang apparently had no intention of actually following through on that.

I understand that OB needs revitalization, especially along 107 between the Pine Valley strip mall and downtown OB, and that this would strongly benefit the downtown merchants, which would in turn benefit all local residents. The plusses must clearly outweigh the minuses if that's going to happen.

Turning residential OB into primarily a haven for working rentals is going to have the opposite effect, lowering overall property values, overburdening water utilities and motor vehicle facilities, lowering daily quality of life, without increasing the tax base.

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to attend the 2PM walk this Sunday protesting the proposed Avalon development since our children are having their semi-annual music recital at exactly the same time in Manhasset. Please keep us informed about this issue and know that we fully support your efforts.

Sincerely,
Joseph Burns & Family, Upper Brookville
