Passage of SEA Fund III is Critical

Dear Editor,

As a staunch advocate for the environment, I have supported and lobbied for the successful passage of the Town of Oyster Bay’s first and second SEA Fund Bond referenda. Once again, this year I am reaching out to the community to ask for your full support on November 6th for the Town’s $60million SEA Fund III Bond Referendum.

The prior bonds have passed with an overwhelming majority affording the residents the opportunity to see their investment grow exponentially as properties have been preserved, parklets improved, community centers built, and landscapes beautified. In the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community, our neighbors have experienced the thrill of this preservation in the addition of a Community Center on Haypath Road and the revitalization of this magnificent parklet, which was once neglected and underutilized. We have also seen the incredible enhancements at Borella Fields on Plainview Road, improvements at the Washington Avenue Community Park and in our neighborhood pocket parks.

Our friends and neighbors from the tip of the North and South Shores have enjoyed acquisition of environmentally sensitive and majestic parcels of open space, and beatification of their parks and recreation areas as well. Just to name a few, we have seen a 30 year battle over the Underhill property result in preservation of an enormous portion of the property, construction of new ball fields, creation of the Walker Memorial Park, preservation of the environmentally sensitive Mill Pond site in Oyster Bay, and tremendous acquisition and recycling of a brownfield at the Liberty Industrial site adjacent to Allen Park in Farmingdale.

With increased population and the threat of urbanization as the Island enters the last decade before final build-out, it is critical to maintain focus and a vision towards the future. I laud the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Venditto, for his proactive initiative in taking the lead with the issuance of the very first SEA Fund Bond Act. His leadership and insightful decision paved the pathway for other municipal preservation bonds, the passage of SEA Fund II, and now hopefully the third Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Bond Act.

This plan is fiscally prudent, as well as environmentally sound. For $2.56 for the average household, Town of Oyster Bay residents can play an active role in helping to preserve and protect the Town’s recreational and environmental assets, and our last vestiges of open space for generations to come.

On Election Day, November 6th, I encourage you to exercise your right to be heard by partaking in the election process, and to please Vote YES on Proposition #2 to maintain the highest quality of life in the Town of Oyster Bay. This proposal is truly a win-win for all from shore to shore.

Sincerely,
Carol Meschkow, President
Concerned Citizens of the
Plainview-Old Bethpage Community, Inc.
