Now that Supervisor Venditto and the Town of Oyster Bay are apparently going to dismiss the self-styled "smart growth" application of AvalonBay to build 300 residential units in the Hamlet, it would seem that the project has finally been defeated by the community. Many thanks are due to the leadership of Friends of the Bay and the opposition of numerous other local organizations. I understand that AvalonBay has just, written to the Town asking to withdraw its application. They could, of course, resubmit, but this would be unlikely without making substantial changes to the application.
Development of the facts at recent meetings could easily lead one to the conclusion that this project and its "dumb growth" application have been "brain dead" almost from the start. In any event it seems pretty clear to this reader that the "patient" has been surviving in recent weeks only as the result of a life support system made up of its numerous planning, public relations and engineering consultants, its lawyers and its accountants, most of whom have most likely been benefiting handsomely from this project.
Enough already! Let us hope that they are now PULLING THE PLUG for good and will spare the community from further pain and suffering.
