Syosset RR Safety Measures: Too Little, Too Late

Dear Editor,

As the Democratic nominee for State Senate representing most of the Oyster Bay and Huntington area, I scratch my head regarding the controversy surrounding the Long Island Rail Road and the gap between the trains. It makes me wonder why my opponent waited until last week to come up with $1.5 million worth of grant money for LIRR safety. People should keep three things in mind. The 15 inch gap at the Syosset train station and others throughout the system didn't happen over night, they have been that way for many years. My opponent has had 10 years in the Senate to devote money to this issue, yet someone had to die for him to do something about it. Let's also not loose sight of the fact that it's an election year. A photo op and press conference 12 weeks before an election shouldn't be seen as anything other than a political move. It's another example of the Senate Republican majority keeping the slush fund full, so they can pass out a bunch of money in the weeks leading up to the election. If he really cared about the riders at the Syosset train station the money would have come a long time ago. Lastly, I would argue that it's a waste of money to put cameras on the train platforms. Efforts should be made to prevent people from falling not just give motormen a chance to watch them fall. That's not protecting riders, it's just giving motormen a better view of the accident.

Best Regards,

Leslie Bielanski
Democratic Nominee NYS Senate 5th District
